Resilient Roots: Circles of Belonging

Working with Ximena, we were asked to contemplate origins. Before I thought of lineage, I thought of the spectral identity of “Woman”. I have spent so much of my life wrestling with this instability, and I have since found some solace in the understanding that I was raised in a world where this character has been made into a thing to be sold, and not something built from within. When we start to examine these systems, they begin to unravel and with them, the sense of self we have built upon them. But the greatest freedom can be born from betrayal. We have been given the honor of actualising it for ourselves.
On January 30, 2026 a batch of over 3 million documents were released to the public. Some new information, some new people, incriminating involvements, messages, endorsements, and participation. And with these documents came an expanding realization that so much of the Millennial/Gen Z “girl” was manufactured by the men implicated in Epstein's crimes. It is a lucrative business to teach a demographic what they are and where to purchase it. Victoria’s Secret, PINK, Bath & Body Works, Limited Too, shaped youth culture, marketing to girls and teens during our formative years. The L Brands were built by Les Wexner, whose finances were managed by his power of attorney: Jeffrey Epstein.
Nest in progress...
The patriarchy does not have to work to keep us small. It has taught us to do it to ourselves. Even now, as I write, I am fighting a certain self consciousness about coming across as a manic, bra-burning, Misandrist. Who taught me to fear that I wonder? The greatest resistance is unconditional self acceptance. People who are afraid of your power will call you “radicalized”, you can tell them you have been de-influenced.
Lately, I have been working on returning. One thing I return to, over and over again, is the wilderness. In my work as an outdoor educator and as a wilderness guide, I have been lucky enough to begin to remember. Remember serenity, awe, the euphoria of discovery. A love and deep respect for change and the cyclical. I have also returned to my love of creating with my hands. Of collecting, and honoring the mundane and overlooked. My pieces are a reflection of the duality within me and within all women. To exist it simultaneously with shame, to look it in the eye and dismantle it with compassion. And to live deeper knowing we can just be. We get to build a sense of self understanding which of our roots are truly resilient.
